Acting and Flying
Travolta's passion for flying and acting struck simultaneously at about age 5. His mother and sisters were stage actors and Travolta's earliest memories include seeing them perform on stage and seeing them off at the local airport to catch DC-6s, Constellations and Boeing 707s.
“Both interests came at the same time,” recalls Travolta. “Every cent of my first paychecks went to flying lessons and I'd have done anything to be part of aviation. I started acting early but of course you never know what career is going to work out. I decided that if my acting career didn't work out I'd find some way to become part of aviation.”
Travolta has flown privately since 1978 and appreciates the benefits of corporate aviation. “I've always been highly recognizable. Flying my own aircraft has given me the ultimate privacy and allows for the ultimate scheduling capability.” Since earning his jet rating at age 26 Travolta has invested his movie proceeds in buying a Jet Commander, Citation ISP, Jetstar, Citation II, Hawker IA, DC-3 and a Constellation prior to acquiring his current fleet.
