Travolta's cameo as the blood-and-guts, tonsil-rattling, storm-the-beaches Brigadier General Quintard exhorting his nervous troops before their infamous landing on the bloody beaches of Guadalcanal is a classic moment in famed director Terrence Malick's remake of James Jones' famous battle novel. The story follows the various soldiers confronted by the insane carnage of one of the costliest battles in the Pacific, including a pacifist soldier, his sergeant, a demanding lieutenant colonel and a captain who wrestles with his private decisions about whether his men ought to be sacrificed for a meaningly island.
