Director Nichols insisted that this movie, based on the thinly disguised novel about Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign by Anonymous, aka political writer Joe Klein, was not about the Clintons. Travolta, nonetheless, does a brilliant imitation of a Clintonesque Southern governor running for the White House, who cannot seem to overcome his urges or, despite the heartfelt convictions and ideals of his campaign, the temptation to do almost anything to win.
