In another unexpected role, Travolta plays Sam Baily, a simple museum security guard, who upset over losing his job, goes to see his supervisor - unfortunately, taking his gun with him. Events soon careen out of his control and Sam's "meeting" balloons into a hostage standoff, complete with cops, cameras and journalist Max Brackett (played by Dustin Hoffman) who happens to be in the museum when the action starts. With Max playing to the headlines and orchestrating Sam's moves, the story spreads nationwide, and soon becomes all anyone talks about. What is quickly forgotten in the ratings, however, is Sam and his problem.
